About Cognito
Cognito Technology builds payment, AI and software systems for businesses and startups across Canada. More of our work now runs on connected devices in the real world, from cameras that run AI on site to hardware that unlocks or switches on the moment a payment goes through. We're growing our hardware and edge computing team to design, test and deploy these systems.
The role
You'll own the software that runs on Cognito's edge and IoT devices, from the video pipeline on a camera box to the agent that unlocks a door when a payment clears. You'll pair with our Hardware Engineer on every deployment, and work with our payments and cloud engineers on the path from a transaction to a device.
What you'll do
- 01Build and maintain on-device services in Python, C++ or Rust on embedded Linux.
- 02Run camera pipelines and edge inference (for example GStreamer, DeepStream or TensorRT), and keep them stable for weeks at a time.
- 03Connect devices to our cloud and payment platforms over MQTT and HTTPS, so payment and unlock events reach the right device quickly and only once.
- 04Design for offline: buffer events locally, replay them safely when the connection returns, and never act on the same payment twice.
- 05Ship over-the-air updates with signing, staged rollouts and rollback.
- 06Add device health monitoring, logs and alerts, so we hear about a problem before the customer does.
- 07Work with the Hardware Engineer on pilots: bring-up, on-site debugging and handover.
- 08Write clear docs: device setup, update procedures and runbooks.
What we're looking for
- ●Several years writing production software that runs on Linux devices, not only servers.
- ●Strong in at least one of Python, C++ or Rust.
- ●Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, TLS, DNS) and experience with message queues or pub/sub.
- ●Comfortable debugging on real hardware: serial consoles, logs, and a device that only fails on site.
- ●Clear written communication.
Nice to have
- GStreamer, DeepStream or other video pipeline work.
- Yocto, Buildroot or building custom Linux images.
- Device fleet tools such as Balena, Mender or AWS IoT.
- Payment webhooks, idempotency and event-driven systems.
- Security for connected devices: secure boot, key storage, certificate rotation.
How to apply
Apply through the form on this page with your CV. Tell us about software you shipped that runs on devices in the field, and what you learned when it failed.
