Software Engineering Manager, AI & IoT Systems

Greater Toronto Area, ON Hybrid Full-time, permanent
Apply now Posted November 2, 2026

You'll work across two kinds of projects:

    Track 1

    Lead the team

Plan and staff the work across hardware, embedded and AI projects, set how we review, test and release, and hire and mentor engineers and co-op students.

    Track 2

    Own delivery with clients

Turn client requirements into scoped plans with costs and timelines, keep each project on budget and on schedule, and report progress plainly.

    About Cognito

Cognito Technology builds payment, AI and software systems for businesses and startups across Canada. Our engineers work across three kinds of projects: connected devices that run AI on site, the embedded software that keeps them running, and AI tools for small businesses. We're hiring the manager who leads that team and owns delivery with our clients.

    The role

You'll manage our engineering team: the hardware, embedded software and AI solutions engineers who build what our clients run. You'll decide what gets built and when, sit with clients to agree scope, cost and timelines, keep projects on budget, and set the way we review, test and ship. You'll hire and grow the team, and stay close enough to the work to review designs and unblock people.

    What you'll do

    1. 01Plan, organize and direct the work of our engineering team across hardware, embedded software and AI automation projects: priorities, staffing and delivery dates.
    2. 02Track progress and quality against plan each week, and evaluate how each project and each engineer is doing.
    3. 03Set and enforce our engineering policies and procedures: code review, testing, releases and over-the-air updates, security and access, incident response and documentation.
    4. 04Meet with clients to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines, and turn them into scoped proposals and statements of work.
    5. 05Assemble and manage project teams that design, build, deploy, operate and support the software, devices and networks we run for clients.
    6. 06Control project budgets and spending: estimates, hardware and cloud costs, and vendors, and report variance to leadership.
    7. 07Recruit and supervise engineers, developers and technicians, including co-op students, and plan their training and professional development.
    8. 08Stay hands-on where it counts: architecture and design reviews, hard technical calls, and unblocking the team.

    What we're looking for

    • ●A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, computer or software engineering, or business administration with a strong technical background.
    • ●Five or more years building software, including at least two years managing or supervising engineers.
    • ●You've led client-facing technical projects end to end: requirements, estimates, budget, delivery and handover.
    • ●Enough depth across cloud backends and APIs, connected devices, and LLM-based tools to review designs and make sound technical calls.
    • ●Clear, plain communication with clients, engineers and leadership.

    Nice to have

    • IoT device fleets, embedded Linux or over-the-air updates in production.
    • Payments or PCI-scoped systems.
    • Agency or consulting delivery experience.
    • P.Eng., PMP or similar certification.
    • Hiring through co-op and internship programs.
    • French.
